7 Signs You’re Boarding School Material

High school is just around the corner or you are looking for a change in your educational journey. You may be wondering what boarding school is and if you have what it takes…of course, you do!
We really liked this blog topic from ReadyForMore.com and we thought we would speak to how Kiski fits into each of the seven areas.
There are a lot of unknowns about high school, but you’re sure of one thing—you have big plans for yourself, and you want to be in the right place. If you’ve ever considered a boarding school, The Kiski School may be your perfect fit.

1. You have big goals.
Ready For More: “It’s no secret that boarding schools are a great way to build the resume, report card, and character required for top tier colleges. With classes designed to prepare you for whatever you may want to do, and the staff for support, you’ll have advantages at every turn.”
At Kiski, our highly-skilled teachers are available after hours for extra help sessions or to explore a passion that you may wish to pursue. Three college counselors make our counselor to teacher ratio low, allowing them to truly understand your needs at a one-on-one level. 90% of seniors are accepted at colleges and universities listed on the U.S. News & World Report.

2. You’re passionate about something. Or everything!
RFM: “You’ll find the best of the best at boarding school, and be able to grow in a supportive learning environment. From STEAM to extracurricular activities, you can study everything from robotics and horticulture to music and cultural diversity.”

Kiski is home to more than 30 clubs and activities, but that doesn’t show the whole picture. You could ask to work on an independent project with a faculty member or propose a trip to a place that may inspire your creativity, or take advantage of our facilities, technology, and your fellow classmates to enhance your experience.

3. You’re independent. Or would really like to be!
RFM: “Boarding school gives you the chance to manage your own schedule. Sure, it may sound a little scary to be in charge of when you study, socialize and sleep, but you’re never far from a supportive mentor who will help you build smart habits that will follow you into adulthood.”
Kiski is a college preparatory school that allows students to live independently, learning practical skills like laundry and time management, but also how to live with a roommate and the inevitable differences that will arise.  Our environment allows boys to be away from home under supervision in order to learn responsibility before being thrown into a university environment without oversight.

4. You love the outdoors.
RFM: “Bringing education outdoors – in the country’s most breathtaking places – is one of the coolest things about boarding school. Imagine starting your day on the slopes, or finishing with a sunset hike. Now imagine that every day.”
Our 350-acre campus allows us to bring the outdoors in and move our classrooms out. Whether it is studying the ecosystem of the nearby Kiskiminetas River or simply having class in our outdoor classroom space, golfing nine holes on our private course or fishing in our campus pond, we are constantly utilizing our campus to the fullest.

5. You’re curious about the world.
RFM: “Satisfy your adventurous side while you kick-start your education. By attending boarding school away from home, you’ll be able to explore other parts of the country, and even the world, meeting people from, and in, other cultures.”
We have students from all over the U.S. and the world, in fact, we have students from 15 states and 18 different countries.  On any given day, you can practice your Spanish with native speakers or simply challenge your roommate to FIFA to discover his favorite football club. Our environment makes it possible to have a global conversation without leaving the classroom or lunch table.

6. You’re interested in other people.
RFM: “Boarding school is like living with your best friends because, well, it is living with your best friends. Even better, you’re surrounded by people who are so beautifully different, but share the same passion and appreciation for learning.”
Again, Kiski’s diversity is one of our strengths. We have unique global viewpoints from boys who like various sports, music, academic subjects, food, and more.  Our environment will challenge your ideas, cause you to grow as a person, and consider new opportunities that you never knew existed.

7. You’re YOU.
Independent. Curious. Passionate. Interested and Interesting—YOU. Boarding school celebrates your “you-ness.”
At Kiski, you will find that there is plenty of free time for you to utilize to make yourself more marketable to colleges through community service or studying for an advanced course load.  Or you can choose to spend that time perfecting your lacrosse shot or to learn to play the trumpet. Or maybe you don’t know what is important to you yet and that is ok too, Kiski will give you the time to develop in multiple aspects before making your way to your dream college.
