For many Kiski students it can be difficult to transition from public school to boarding school. Feeling homesick or nervous about attending a new school are normal reactions for students. At Kiski, we strive to make sure all of our students feel welcome and find guidance amongst the staff, alumni, and their peers. Our mentoring program is designed to make the transition easy for students and pair them with a lifelong friend and mentor.
The Kiski mentoring program was launched in 2005 by Paul Zanardi, Kiski class of 1981. Zanardi valued his time at Kiski so much that he wanted to give back to the school and its students by volunteering as a mentor. While at Kiski, Zanardi learned how to develop meaningful relationships and communication skills, as well as how to work diligently and study effectively. As part of the mentoring program, Zanardi and other alumni were given the opportunity to reinforce these skills in young Kiski students.
Benefits of Mentoring
Having a mentor provides a variety of benefits for the mentee. Not only does it ease the transition from middle school to high school but mentor programs also lead to healthier relationships and lifestyle choices. Here are a few other advantages to having a mentorship program according to Youth.gov:
Improved graduation rates
Better attitude about education
Enhanced self-esteem and confidence
Decreased likelihood of engaging in harmful behavior such as drug and alcohol use
Encourages better relationships with parents and teachers
Kiski’s mentoring programs also involves career advice from alumni. The program hosts a Career Day where students have the opportunity to explore different options for their futures. Career Day also enables students to figure out what steps they need to take to achieve their goals.
Kiski boys aren’t the only ones benefiting from this program. The relationships that develop between alumni and students are also advantageous to Kiski alumni. As mentors, alumni can develop their own communication skills while fostering a sense of accomplishment. Our mentoring program is a great way to develop connections with professionals, volunteers, and the future professionals our Kiski students are sure to become.
