Kiski to Host 19th Annual International Food Festival

It’s that time of the year again: The Kiski School’s Annual International Food Festival! With a student population consisting of 25% international students, we pride ourselves on our diverse community, and the International Food Festival is one of many ways we share and explore our heritages with one another.

Established in 1997, this will be Kiski’s 19th International Food Festival. The festival’s director, Carla Ross, has been in charge of arranging this event for the past five years. When asked about the planning and preparation for the festival, Mrs. Ross said that the students and their parents play a big role in choosing recipes, cooking the food, and decorating the tables. Any student, along with their friends or family, who wishes to prepare food that reflects his family’s ethnic background is welcome to participate.

This year, over 15 countries will be represented by students, parents, and faculty including America, Mexico, France, Hungary, Italy, China, India, Poland, Croatia, Cuba, Brazil, and Ireland.  Before the food is displayed, each table is decorated with items made or collected by students and families to reflect the history, art, and culture behind the cuisine.

In addition to cooking the food and making the decorations, students are given the opportunity to submit artwork for the International Food Festival T-shirt Design Contest several weeks before the festival. The winning T-shirt designs (voted on by faculty and staff members) are printed and purchased by the Kiski community and encouraged to be worn at the festival. This year’s T-shirt Design Contest winners are Ryan Pettes, Melvin Bermudez, and George Davison.

“The International Food Festival is one of the best days that Kiski has. Anyone who is a part of this community is given the opportunity to get a taste of another culture and to share another culture. It’s a great day–not only to eat, but also to learn,” Mrs. Ross added.

The 2017 International Food Festival will take place on Sunday, March 5 at 5:30 p.m. in the dining hall. We look forward to seeing everyone there!
