The college search process is an exciting time full of personal reflection, exploration, and planning. Finding a school that will be a good fit for a student both academically and socially is important. At The Kiski School, we want graduates to feel excited about the opportunities and challenges that await them in college, and empowered to make choices about their futures. The College Counseling
team at Kiski helps students throughout the entire college admission process, using a student-centered approach that allows boys to take ownership of the search for the right match and help them along the way.
Jaye Beebe, Kiski’s Director of College Counseling, is currently in his 15th year at Kiski and in his 41st year working in college counseling. He supervises a team comprised of three college counselors, all heavily experienced in working with boarding schools.
“Our goal is to match the boy to the most appropriate college – academically, intellectually, socially, and politically – so that the four year experience is fruitful and worthwhile,” Mr. Beebe said.
While students are encouraged to explore the extracurricular opportunities during their freshman year and take the PSAT their sophomore year, the official start for students’ post high school planning begins in the fall of their junior year.
“This is when the college counseling team makes an exerted effort to work with the boys as they go through the soul searching of trying to figure out exactly who they are and what they want to be,” Mr. Beebe added.
During the last four years, Kiski graduates have attended an array of the nation’s most highly esteemed colleges and universities, including Allegheny, Dickinson, Haverford, Penn State, the University of Pittsburgh, UCLA, Colorado College, Pitzer, and the The United States Naval Academy.
When asked what sets Kiski’s college counseling program apart from programs at other schools, Mr. Beebe explained that with three college counselors and an average of 55-60 boys in a senior class, the counselors are able to get to know each student individually, and in return, students receive quality one-on-one guidance to help them through the college admission process.
“Many of us teach them. Many of us coach them. Many of us live in the dorm with them. We’re looking at these boys face-to-face 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Mr. Beebe said. “It’s an incredibly inspiring experience to watch these kids grow up and go off to college.”
The Kiski School has a 100% college attendance rate
and about 80% of students attend one of the top 100 institutions in the nation as ranked by U.S. News. Interested in learning more about how Kiski can help prepare your son for college? Contact us or schedule a visit!
