Kiski Hockey Captures 3rd Straight Rock N' Roll Championship

The Varsity Hockey Team participated in The Rock’N Roll Tournament this past weekend in Cleveland. In the 2016 tournament, the team finished in third place by losing only one game. The boys then went on to claim the tournament title in 2017,2018 and now in 2019 to complete the 3-peat. The team has a record of 14-1-1 at the Rock’N Roll Tournament since 2016.

A recap from Head Coach and Athletic Director, Chris Spahn:
"Game 1 Friday night vs. Loyola Academy (Chicago). In a rematch of the 2017 championship game, the Cougars got off to a slow start, but Billy Gillis bailed the team out time and again in the first period. The boys got their legs in the second period and held a 1-0 lead after two periods of play. The third period started and Loyola was all over us. An unfortunate bounce of Nathan Salaris’ stick tied the game at 1-1. A couple minutes of back and forth hockey and the Loyola was called for a penalty and the boys went to work. Nathan Salaris, having overcome the unfortunate bounce of the puck, made a perfect pass to Jake Rosa for a great power play goal. The Cougars held on for a 2-1 victory to open the tournament.

Game 2  Saturday morning vs. Olentangy Liberty. This was not a good game. We outshot Olentangy 39-15, but tied 4-4. We were actually trailing 2-1 heading into the third period. Coach Novom gave a very inspirational speech in between the second and third period, which resulted in the boys scoring three third period goals to preserve the tie. We did lose a player in this game as Ian Russ suffered an injury that would keep him out of the rest of the tournament. If the boys wanted to win this tournament, they knew they had to play better hockey Saturday evening.

Game 3 Saturday evening vs. St. Edwards School (host school). The boys came out flying and built a 3-0 lead after the first period. The final score was 7-0 in favor of the Cougars, but the game was won in the first period. Billy Gillis and Patrick Jacob combined for the shutout and a crucial victory. The boys would get a good meal after the game and go back to the hotel to rest for their game Sunday afternoon.

Game 4 Sunday afternoon vs. St. Ignatius. The boys played a solid game and Ben Crewe backstopped the Cougars to a 4-2 victory. The boys took a 2-1 lead after the first period and a 3-1 lead heading into the third. St. Ignatius closed to within one, 3-2, with a nice power play goal. The pressure was on and we would see what the boys were made of. We became a little undisciplined with 2:30 to go in the game and called for a penalty. St. Ignatius pulled their goalie and began a 6 on 4 power play for two minutes. The team did a great job on the penalty kill, and Ben Crewe made a huge stop before Ben Foster scored an open net goal to secure the victory and championship."
